Packages

In VALET, a package is a software component, where "component" can mean an application, a code library, a set of man pages, or a combination of all these pieces. For example, Mathematica would be an application: all the end user needs is for the appropriate directory to be on his/her

XML Package Definition Files

In version 2 of VALET, packages (and their versions) can still be defined in XML files (with an augmented grammar for new features). VALET 2 can use .vpkg files from version 1 for backward compatibility, but many version 2 features are only available using the newer XML grammar.

XML Package Definition Files (version 1.0)

VALET packages (and their versions) are defined in XML files; each package available on a system has its own package definition file, named as <<package-id>>.vpkg. For example, all versions of Mathematica would be defined in a file named

JSON Package Definition Files

In version 2 of VALET, packages (and their versions) can also defined in JSON files. JSON -- short for JavaScript Object Notation -- is an open standard format that uses human-readable text to represent structured data, just as XML does. XML carries with it a heavy amount of additional formatting surrounding the data, which some people find makes the data itself less visible when inspected.

VALET Automates Linux Environment Tasks

Introduction

One particularly annoying aspect of cluster computing for most users is getting the environment setup properly given a set of requisite libraries and applications. Quite often in a cluster environment there are multiple versions of a library available at any one time, and knowing which to use when running a program can often mean the difference between predictable, correct results and a flawed or even failed execution.
